MEHDI SMILES FOREVER

I’ve been putting off writing this up ever since hearing of the news.  You cry a lot when you lose something or someone valuable.

This dude was VALUABLE.

RIP Mehdi.

I think all of us that knew Mehdi have been through a rough past week.  I heard about the passing the day after having an awesome night with my brother, Louis in NYC.  Then the next morning, the earth shatters… and you just cannot stop yourself from crying wherever you are.

Now, let’s wipe away some of those tears and remember why we liked the guy so much in the first place.  THE SMILE.

I was fortunate to have my camera most times Mehdi was performing b/c I started off as a fan (totally geeked out whenever him and the other Bangers played)… So I want to share some of the great moments I got to capture with my little cam.

9.10.2011. – THE FINAL GOODBYE. CARTE BLANCHE @ BESTIVAL 2011.

So, somehow, by the lovely graces of Annie Mac, I got to tag along on her epic stage at Bestival and managed to capture this really pretty moment of the boys doing their thing on the big stage one last time. I showed this to a couple of my friends and we teared up b/c it’s just beautiful to see the homies just having one last good moment in time. Carte Blanche was excellent. They went out on top b/c they genuinely had fun on stage. This is proof. Shout out to A-Trak, Fake Blood, Annie Mac, HenRiton for just the sheer fun and good times

3.24-26.2011 – EPIC MIAMI BIRTHDAY WEEKEND :)

I shot this when Mehdi played at the HARD Miami party. I mean, it was my Birthday weekend in Miami and things just couldn’t get better. Much love and thanks for letting this video be a part of your touching tribute, 2ManyDJs.

Oh wait, things DID get better. At the night at BAR in Miami, Mehdi decided to play a “vintage summer of 2007 set.” As you can see in my off-camera reactions and Mike B, LOUIS, RoLOL BOYS Jerome’s reactions… we are pretty fucking geeked. I have had long conversations with Mike about how that summer forever changed our lives and was sort of our “Summer of ’69.” I have to admit something though, Mehdi told me not to put up this video after a conversation at 7am the next morning with the Miami sun rising and him chillin in a robe and trunks and sunglasses. He thought it was too cheesy… I’m sorry for the cheesiness Mehdi, but I had to put it up b/c it represents that undying love for the “Summer of ’07.”

7.3.2010 – FIRST TIME SEEING CARTE BLANCHE IN LA!

I wasn’t gonna miss this for the world. Especially after watching Mike’s video from their premiere at Fabric months before…

4.20.2010 – BEST BIRTHDAY DJ EVER!

I remember this day b/c I made up some fake excuse to leave the office early so I could spend time in the fabled Beachside mansion that all the Frenchies had somehow invaded for Pedro’s birthday. Cut to this good moment of just Gaspard and Guillaume chilling while Mehdi decides to take it away with the trademark smile. Never too cool to be cool in front of cool cats.

4.21.2009 – HOLY SHIT OMFG!

YES. THIS DESERVES ALL CAPS. THOMAS BANGALTER ON THE DECKS. UNMASKED. AND GUESS WHAT HE’S PLAYING. NO BIG DEAL. IN THIS MOMENT YOU CAN SEE WHY MEHDI MADE US SMILE. HE HAD THE ABILITY TO MAKE ROBOT LEGENDS SMILE.

7.22.2009 – BEST SET INTRO EVER.

nuff said.

10.4.2008 – A GOOD SUNDAY

Thanks for cementing your legendary status by playing one of my favorite legendary parties, The DO-OVER

…and of course he played my other FAVORITE PARTY in LA started by another fallen legend, DJ AM.

10.19.2007 – YOUNG A-TRAK & MEHDI & KAVINSKY LOLZ

Mannnnn, I remember this night. This was one fun night. I think I took a girl to the party, told her to wait in the crowd, and then I jumped up onstage to do some ninja video shit. I grabbed this and I was giddy as a school girl b/c I wasn’t even friends with these dudes yet. So tight!

10.6.2007 – DETOUR FEST! DUDEDZ!

Oh man, this was a fucking great time. This was totally in the hey-day of my Ed Banger fanning out days. Somehow I developed a friendship with Kavinsky that has stuck with me b/c he was the dude that introduced me to all these French dudes making sweet sweet music. I think we smoked a J or something to cement the friendship.

5.1.2007 – HELLO MEHDI

…Which brings me back to this video. I remember this was the day after Coachella and I begged my friend to get me on some list to this party above The Roxy b/c I had missed that epic JUSTICE/MSTRKRFT show that Franki put up on Halloween. I was so excited initially to see the Justice boys perform… but then I saw Mehdi. I saw this sweaty dude that kept dancing and smiled, always giving it way more heart and soul into TO the audience than the audience could possibly ever give back…

…So with that said, I say farewell to you my friend. I had a great time being a fan-first then eventually your friend. You have changed many people’s lives and you will forever be missed. You will and will always be the FOREVER SMILE.

See, even SO-ME agrees.

WE LOVE YOU SO.
RIP MEHDI (1977-2011)

  1. Great post Glen, this made my day.

Amazing collection man! I never formally met the man but he meant the world to me. Beginning in the Banana Split days, I admired everything he did, from his beautiful family to the beautiful musical escape from the world only he knew how to create. I strive everyday to be a little more like Mehdi. One of the only people in the world that you can capture pure joy every in every photo and video you take of them.

I just wanted to say a huge thankyou for filming Carte Blanche at Bestival, I was there, front row, excited that this was my first (and unfrotunately last) time seeing Mehdi and Riton perform together. It really was amazing, just the energy <3
(Lol, I remember that same night when Annie Mac played Stardust's 'Music sounds better with you' and you made triangles, I was wearing my Daft Punk shirt so I was crazily making triangles back! Now I sound like a crazy stalker…..)
What an amazing night, later on when Busy P was on the Redbull stage I was lucky enough to shake Mehdi's hand. What an amazing man. I'll never ever forget that night.

  5. Damn Glen, wonderful tribute… I remember some of those shows, especially the Roxy, like they were yesterday. That was in the earlier days of my foray into electronic music and I remember leaving the club that night feeling so blessed that I got to witness the 3 the three of them putting it down. Definitely a tragic loss, but certainly glad that his music lives on. D
